SOME FLORIDA STATE DRIVING LAWS AND INFORMATION WHICH SHOULD HELP THE FIRST TIME TRAVELER'S TO THE USA

  1. Right turn on a red after (STOP), unless otherwise posted. You MUST come to a complete stop.

  2. Posted speed limit (STRICTLY) enforced.

  3. Yield (Give Way) right of way to all other traffic and pedestrians at stop signs. At four-way stops, the first vehicle to stop should move forward first. If two vehicles reach the intersection at the same time, the drive on the left yields (GIVE WAY) to the driver on the right.

  4. The driver and the passengers (MUST) wear seat belts.

  5. All children 5 years or younger (MUST) use a restraint device when riding in a motor vehicle. Infant carriers or children’s car seats (MUST) be used for children three years old and younger.

  6. The first drops of rain will make the roads slippery. This makes driving conditions dangerous. Slow down and plan for at least two times the normal stopping distance.

  7. Drive in the right lane except on a one-way street. Do not change lanes until you may do so safety. Pass on the left.

  8. Turn your headlights (ON) whenever you turn your windshield wipers on.

  9. Driving while intoxicated is a (VERY) serious offence with loss of licence and heavy fines.

  10. (ALWAYS) carry you driver’s licence with you when driving.

  11. (ALWAYS) carry alcohol in the trunk (BOOT) and not inside the car with you as this is an offence.

  12. All traffic both ways (MUST) come to a stop when a school bus stops and has it’s lights flashing, this is to unload school children.

  13. Police / Fire / Ambulance dial 911

On the road

In Florida and all the rest of the USA you drive on the right hand side of the road! Keep to the speed limits as you (WILL) be fined very heavily for breaking these!

If you are stopped by a police officer for any reason you (MUST) stay in your car until the police officer comes to you! (DO NOT) attempt to get out of your vehicle.  Make sure you carry your driving license with you (AT ALL TIMES) and also keep your rental agreement for your rental vehicle with you too, otherwise (YOU WILL) be fined.

(NEVER) drink and drive.

Roads in the USA are larger that in the UK, so driving is more relaxed than it is in the UK.

You will be overtaken on both sides when you drive on the freeways (MULTILANE ROADS), so be very careful.
